How can there be a ton of extra money lying around in our Village bank account?
Simple. You have been over-taxed and the money is just sitting there doing nothing.
Surprised? I was too.
But each year our Village’s Government spends far less than they plan to spend in the budget. On average the gap is $100,000 each year. That’s not good money management. That’s bad planning.
Because you pay taxes on the budget not the outcome. The extra money is already paid…by you. So a bad budget means extra taxes.
That money, now over a million dollars, is held by the Village in what is called a “Fund Balance.” And don’t let anyone tell you it’s for a rainy day. We keep almost 75% of our anticipated annual expenses in that fund. For comparison, the Town keeps about 25%. Brewster keeps about 27% Dover 22%.
That’s not “rainy day money,” that’s a slush fund.
So, we have been over-taxed. Period. And I can’t give you that money back. Wish I could. But as Mayor I’ll improve our budgeting and your taxes could go down. And we can put some of that other “slush” money that you overpaid, to work and make the Village better. Reach out and I'll tell you how.
